Abstract

One of the side effects of the fast growth of industries is the increase of waste products. For example, an electroplating industry produces wastes that contain heavy metals such as copper (Cu). The purpose of this research is to degrade the concentration of Cu using the electrolysis process. Two variables are utilized: the current and voltage of the electricity. The variations of current in this research are 1 ampere, 3 amperes, and 5 amperes. Meanwhile, the variations of voltage are 3 volts, 4,5volts, and 6 volts. This process is operated in a batch process for duration of 180 minutes or 3 hours. The results indicate that the electrolysis process can degrade the concentration of heavy metal, Cu, successfully. The greater the current and voltage used, the greater the concentration removal efficiency of Cu. The electrolysis process is able to remove the concentration of heavy metal Cu up to 99.94 % for duration of 180 minutes when the magnitude of the current is 5 amperes and the voltage is 6 volts.
