Abstract

Carbon nanotubes, which are synthesized by catalytic decomposition of methane, still contain impurities like metallic particle catalyst and amorphous carbon which can reduce the product quality. The quality of carbon nanotubes can be improved by purification using microwave heating and ultrasonic mixing. Based on SEM and XRD characterization, purification with 20 minute heating time and 60 minute ultrasonication gave the best results. This treatment method resulted in effective repair of carbon nanotube structure and metal catalyst reduction, without damaging the carbon crystals. The crystal size after purification was about 6.1 nm.
